The 2023 TSA Honorary Awards Ceremony at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on April 30th was a celebration of excellence within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The event honored outstanding individuals and teams for their remarkable contributions to TSA’s mission.
“It’s my greatest honor and privilege to highlight our incredible employees,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “This year’s TSA Honorary Awards is another opportunity for me to personally show my appreciation of our award recipients from across TSA, who have made significant contributions in support of TSA’s mission.”
“We’re here today to honor the remarkable dedication of TSA personnel who go above and beyond in their service to ensure the safety and security of the American people,” said Department of Homeland Security Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Secretary Kristie Canegallo. “It’s a privilege to highlight and celebrate their ongoing commitment to excellence.”
One of the prestigious awards presented was the Gerardo Hernandez “In the Line of Duty” Award, commemorating the bravery and heroism demonstrated by TSA Officer Gerardo Hernandez. Amanda Houck from Intelligence and Analysis received this award for her exceptional courage and quick thinking during a snowy, mountainous road accident in eastern Washington. Amanda’s selfless actions in providing aid to the injured showcased her professionalism and dedication to duty.
Another noteworthy award was the Norman Y. Mineta “Cornerstone” Award, recognizing Amber Waldner-Ortiz of Intelligence and Analysis for her exemplary leadership at the National Transportation Vetting Center (NTVC) West in Colorado Springs. Despite facing personal challenges, Amber’s commitment to her team and the national security mission remained unwavering, earning her this prestigious accolade.
The “Blogger Bob” Award, named in memory of Curtis “Bob” Burns, acknowledged the Strategic Communications & Public Affairs Media Relations team for their outstanding efforts in engaging the public and promoting TSA’s initiatives through social media and press interactions.
Heather Proctor, a member of Domestic Aviation Operations at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, was honored with the Public Service Award for her extensive volunteer work with various organizations, including the American Cancer Society and local schools, demonstrating her commitment to serving her community.
Additionally, several other TSA employees and teams were recognized for their exceptional performance and dedication across different categories, highlighting the diverse talents and contributions within the organization.
