Google will be prohibited from favoring its Google Travel ecosystem

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is set to impact major tech companies, including Google and Booking.com, as they meet the criteria of being “gatekeepers.”

These companies, with a market cap of at least $82 billion and 45 million active monthly users, will face restrictions on their operations and business practices.

In the travel sector, Google will be prohibited from favouring its Google Travel ecosystem in search results over free results from competitors like Expedia, Tripadvisor, and Booking Holdings. Currently, Google self-favours its own business by prominently displaying a map with hotel prices and search results above free results from other platforms.

The DMA aims to ensure competitiveness and preserve innovation in the sector by restraining Google’s actions.

Booking.com, expecting to meet the criteria by the end of 2023, is also concerned about the implications of the DMA. The specifics of how the act will impact the company are unclear, but Booking.com is engaged in negotiations with the European Commission to address the applicability of the DMA to its business.

While the DMA intends to promote transparency, prevent app blocking, and encourage interoperability, the financial impact on the companies will depend on the fine print. Violations of the DMA rules could result in fines of up to 10% of global revenue. Overall, the DMA is seen as a way to curb monopolistic practices and protect the interests of the travel sector and consumers.
