With the World Bank on Wednesday, Fiji has signed a $200 million contract to build up the tourism potential of Vanua Levu, the second-largest island of the country. The agreement was signed by Biman Prasad, the Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji and Manuela Ferro, Regional Vice President World Bank, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Prasad said that for Vanua Levu, the Fiji Tourism Development Program will not only strengthen tourism, but show the way to the development of sewage system, drainage, and infrastructure of the transport in general.
He mentioned that the project will aim on conquering obstructions and encouraging sustainable tourism, while highlighting the urgency for flexible infrastructure, ability for improvement and effectual project management.
Ferro said that the World Bank financed program attracts together many developmental aspects like financial growth, job generation and its possibility to inspire the broader financial system.
The project is expected to bring profit to at least 60,000 Fijians as per World Bank Report by generating new opportunities related to jobs and tourism infrastructure investment.
Sanctioned by the Executive Directors of World Bank Board in June this year, this program is the first of three projects planned in 10 years to assist Fiji provide its vision more sustainably.
