Saudi Arabia has taken significant strides in enhancing the Hajj experience for elderly and disabled pilgrims. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, under the direction of Saudi leadership, has rolled out expanded services to ensure all pilgrims can participate fully and safely in this sacred journey.

Abdullah Al-Harbi, the Director General of Social Responsibility and Voluntary Work at the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, emphasized the ministry’s dedication to providing effective services for a smooth and enriching Hajj experience. The Kingdom’s efforts focus on making the holy sites accessible and providing comprehensive support for all pilgrims.

By Dr Vikram Vora, Medical Director, International SOS shares his experience “The rigorous activities involved in Hajj, such as circumambulation, walking between hills of Safa and prolonged standing, can lead to physical fatigue and strain. Hence, it is extremely important to build physical endurance in the period leading up to the pilgrimage. While core exercises are highly recommended, one can start training by walking for 30 mins a day, gradually building to a brisk pace and greater distances over days or weeks”.

Key upgrades include specially equipped buses, clearly marked routes for stoning the Jamarat, and accessible pathways throughout the holy sites. To further support those with disabilities, dedicated medical teams and over 6,500 trained volunteers are available to assist. These volunteers help prevent overcrowding, facilitate preferential entry and exit, and offer general assistance as needed.

Khalid Khabrani, spokesperson for the Authority of People with Disabilities, highlighted the collaborative efforts with other Hajj stakeholders to ensure accessibility for pilgrims with various needs. Services such as sign language translation, electric wheelchairs, and Braille copies of the Quran are provided to enhance the experience for disabled pilgrims.

In addition to Hajj, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah offers year-round programs for first-time Umrah performers with newly acquired motor disabilities. These programs include guided Umrah rituals and visits to significant landmarks in Makkah, further demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s commitment to inclusivity.

Beyond the holy sites, Saudi Arabia offers a wealth of attractions for tourists visiting during Hajj.

Top Tourist Attractions in Saudi Arabia:

Makkah: The Great Mosque of Makkah, the Abraj Al Bait Towers, and Jabal Al-Noor are must-visit sites.
Madinah: The Prophet’s Mosque, Quba Mosque, and Mount Uhud offer profound historical and spiritual experiences.

Riyadh: Explore the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, Al Masmak Fortress, and the modern marvel of Kingdom Centre.

Jeddah: Visit the stunning Red Sea coast, Al-Balad historical district, and the Floating Mosque.

Saudi Arabia‘s comprehensive measures ensure that Hajj is a truly inclusive experience, reflecting its dedication to accessibility and support for all pilgrims. Whether participating in Hajj or exploring the Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, visitors are guaranteed a memorable and fulfilling journey.
