Michigan Takes Action Against Unauthorized Alterations in Health Plans

In observance of Insurance Awareness Day on June 28, Anita Fox, the Director of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), emphasized today the importance of consumer protection against Health Insurance Marketplace fraud. She stressed that it is illegal to alter someone’s plan, coverage options, or designated agent without their consent. Michigan residents who have noticed unauthorized modifications to their Marketplace plans are encouraged to report these issues to DIFS, allowing the Department to take necessary regulatory measures.ucation.

“Every Michigander should have access to affordable, high quality health insurance that they can count on when they need it most,” said Director Fox. “Signing up for a plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace gives people the coverage they need to protect their family’s wellbeing, and today’s action will give them peace of mind that no one else can change their coverage without their consent. We will continue to identify every method possible to protect people from bad actors and work to protect health insurance coverage for Michigan families.”

DIFS serves as the regulatory body overseeing insurance and financial services in Michigan, responsible for licensing insurance agents and approving health insurance plans for sale on the federally operated Health Insurance Marketplace. In today’s bulletin, the Department issued a reminder to agents and others that the following actions are violations of state law:

Modifying an insured’s plan or agent of record without obtaining the proper consent.

Submitting false information, such as inaccurate income levels for consumers, which could lead them to qualify for inappropriate premium tax credits and potentially result in higher tax liabilities later.

Falsifying another person’s signature on an insurance application.
