New Max movies: all of the new films to stream in July 2024

New Max movies are released on Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) mega streamer every month. I know, what a shocking revelation, but it’s true. Each time a new month rolls around, we’re treated to a whole host of new movies, including a number of Max Originals and plenty of third-party films.

So, what’s new this month on the platform? You’ll have to read on to find out. If you’re inexplicably unable to find something appealing from July’s list of new films, you can read our what’s new on Max in July article for some TV show recommendations instead. Alternatively, read our guide on the best Max movies for other top-tier options on one of the world’s best streaming services. You’ll find something worth watching in those articles, I can assure you. So, what are you waiting for? Hop to it and read about the new Max movies you can stream today.

New Max movies: my top picks for July

Black Adam

Release date: July 1
RT score: 38% (critics); 88% (audience)

This Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson-starring superhero flick follows the titular Teth-Adam, a centuries-old Kahndaq native blessed with god-like powers who, after escaping prison, does battle with the modern-day Justice Society. That superhero group comprises Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

Black Adam isn’t one of the best superhero films ever made – indeed, in my opinion, it’s just another generic DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie. But, you and/or fans of the Rock might get a kick out of it if you like seeing the A-lister toss military planes and other objects around. And hey, if you’re not a fan of Johnson’s, or simply want a not-so-great superhero film to stream and laugh at, this is equally worth loading up.

The Saw movie collection

Release date: July 1
RT score: 9% to 80% (critics); 41% to 89% (audience)

Few horror movie series can claim to be as profitable as Lionsgate’s Saw franchise. The popular series has earned over $1 billion secured at the global box office against a $97 million budget – that’s the total cost of all 10 Saw films to date, too. As I said, a money-spinning series, this most certainly is.

Naturally, some entries are better than others. The original flick and, surprisingly, 2023’s Saw X are the best of the bunch, while the less said about its Spiral spin-off, Saw V, and Saw 3D, the better (read our best Saw movies ranked piece for more on what we think of them). The first six Saw movies are all available to stream right now, so you can get your fill of incredibly gruesome character deaths before Saw XI arrives in theaters. Before you embark on your first Saw film marathon, read our guide on how to watch the Saw movies in order.

The Sixth Sense

Release date: July 1
RT score: 86% (critics); 90% (audience)

Before horror/thriller auteur M. Night Shymalan’s films became famous for their not-always-good plot twists, this 1999 psychological mystery flick shocked theater goers with its rug-pulling narrative. Iconic actor Bruce Willis plays Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist hired to investigate a case involving Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), who’s tormented by visions of the dead.

One of Bruce Willis’ best eight movies, not to mention a film that should definitely be on our best horror movies list, The Sixth Sense is a slow burn at times, but that only adds to its foreboding and tension-filled atmosphere. It’s occasionally frightening, too, plus the chemistry between Willis and Osment is spectrally spectacular. Stick this on your new Max movies watchlist ASAP.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Release date: July 4
RT score: 54% (critics); 91% (audience)

Just over three months on from its theatrical release, the latest MonsterVerse flick stomps onto Max in time for Independence Day. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees the enemies-turned-friends unite once more to take on a common enemy – this time, in the form of the Skar King, another Ape Titan who wants to establish a new world order where he rules over his fellow gigantic monsters.

2024’s follow-up to Godzilla vs Kong wasn’t as well received by critics as its forebear, but I found it to be a fun-filled, action romp that delivers another monstrous epic entry involving Godzilla and his fellow kaiju. If you’re down for two hours of big creatures slapping the crap out of each other, this is one not to miss.

Love Lies Bleeding

Release date: July 19
RT score: 94% (critics); 82% (audience)

The latest film to join Max following WBD’s first-rights streaming deal with acclaimed indie studio A24 last December, Love Lies Bleeding is a dark rom-com thriller that continues the entertainment company’s hot streak of fantastic flicks. Rose Glass’ neo-noir genre movie stars Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart as Jackie and Lou, a female bodybuilder and reclusive gym manager who strike up a steamy bond upon meeting. Unfortunately, it isn’t long before Lou’s past catches up with her, and the pair become entangled in the crime family affairs of Lou’s estranged father (Ed Harris).

A pulpy, lust-driven, and violent film, Love Lies Bleeding is another masterful movie from Glass. Another of July’s new Max movies that needs to be seen.
