The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has become a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), aligning itself with global efforts towards sustainable travel. The KTO plays a pivotal role in boosting the national economy and enhancing public welfare by promoting tourism, developing tourism resources, conducting tourism-related research and development, and implementing training programs for tourism professionals.

Sustainability Efforts in Korea

The KTO is focused on enhancing the quality of life for residents and boosting the local economy through initiatives aimed at bolstering domestic tourism. Its strategy includes making domestic travel more attractive, fostering regional partnerships to promote balanced growth in tourism, and creating a sustainable and inclusive tourism environment.

The “Green New Deal” of South Korea, initiated in 2020, is a comprehensive plan aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050. The plan’s major components include:

Renewable Energy Expansion: This includes a significant increase in solar and wind power capacity to boost the proportion of renewable energy sources in South Korea’s energy portfolio, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Green Remodeling: Enhancing the energy efficiency of buildings to reduce overall energy use and promoting sustainable living by integrating advanced technologies and materials.

Development of Green Infrastructure: This involves creating smart grids and green transport systems that support sustainable urban development by improving energy efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of infrastructure.

Promotion of Eco-friendly Vehicles: The government encourages the production and adoption of electric and hydrogen vehicles to cut down on fossil fuel use and lower emissions in the transportation sector.

Support for Green Industries: This includes providing incentives and policy support for businesses that adopt sustainable practices and technologies, fostering sectors such as renewable energy and smart industrial solutions.

Environmental Protection Efforts: Funding projects focused on ecosystem restoration, water quality enhancement, and the preservation of natural habitats, aiming at the long-term sustainability and resilience of natural resources. This includes the development of smart water management systems and early disaster warning technologies.

These initiatives demonstrate South Korea’s dedication to sustainability and the promotion of a green economy, incorporating extensive measures to safeguard the environment, enhance energy efficiency, and foster sustainable growth.

GSTC Welcomes the Korea Tourism Organization

“We at GSTC welcome the opportunity of working with KTO to advance sustainable tourism practices in Korea’s rich and diverse visitor economy,” says Randy Durband, GSTC CEO.

Established as a cornerstone for national economic advancement through tourism, the Korea Tourism Organization strives to improve national welfare by leveraging tourism as a crucial economic driver.
