The Potential of Virtual Reality in the New Travel Industry

[[{“value”:”Reading Time: 2 minutes

The future of travel and communication might lie in virtual reality (VR), according to experts. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently discussed the company’s ongoing VR innovations, including a concept called “teleportation,” which they hope to realize by the end of the decade.

Facebook’s Role in the VR Future

A report from The Information highlights Zuckerberg’s vision where, by 2030, users could don smart glasses to “teleport” to offices or other people’s homes. This technology would enable in-person-like interactions through VR, potentially reducing the need for physical travel, thus helping combat climate change. Facebook’s ownership of Oculus, a popular VR headset brand, positions it at the forefront of this technological revolution.

In a recent blog post, Facebook outlined its 10-year vision for VR and augmented reality (AR). The company envisions a future where smart glasses could replace smartphones or computers, enabling users to feel physically present with friends and family, regardless of their actual location. These glasses would use contextually aware AI and rich 3D virtual information, allowing users to stay present in the physical world while accessing virtual data seamlessly.

Advancements Bringing VR Closer to Reality

Significant technological advancements are making VR “teleportation” more feasible. Oculus is currently testing hand tracking to enhance the VR experience, and improvements in 5G connectivity and high-speed internet allow for the streaming of high-definition 360-degree videos in real time.

Colin Rose, CEO of Objective Reality Studios, a VR software company, believes that VR teleportation could become available to consumers within five years. Rose notes that the technology for rendering full-body images in VR is progressing, with the current challenge being to superimpose users into virtual environments without requiring green screens. He predicts that prices for advanced VR technologies, like HoloLens, haptic feedback vests, and omnidirectional treadmills, will decrease, making them accessible to the average consumer.

Rose’s company is developing a VR classroom application to “teleport” students into a virtual learning environment. “Anyone who’s used VR knows that it has the ability to immerse you in a way that no other tech can,” Rose said.

Practical Applications Beyond Travel

VR teleportation could also revolutionize real estate, particularly for seniors looking for homes that meet their accessibility needs. Dave Kohl, marketing director at First In Promotions, says their VR tours allow prospective buyers to experience homes at eye level with a 360-degree view, helping them assess the suitability of the space without physical travel.

As VR technology continues to evolve, it promises to transform not just travel, but various aspects of everyday life, making distant places and experiences more accessible than ever before.
