GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) has taken a significant step towards inclusivity by launching the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This new initiative is designed to improve the travel experience for passengers with hidden disabilities, reinforcing GHIAL’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and offering seamless, socially responsible services.

Hidden disabilities are not immediately visible to others and can include conditions such as low vision, autism, dementia, intellectual disabilities, or hearing loss. The Sunflower Program enables passengers with hidden disabilities to discreetly communicate their needs and request assistance by wearing a sunflower lanyard. Recognized worldwide, the lanyard signals to airport staff that the wearer may require additional assistance, patience, or time. However, it does not guarantee expedited services such as fast-tracking through security.

Information about this program is available on GHIAL’s website. Passengers can share their travel details in advance through an online form or request assistance on the day of travel at the airport’s Information Desk, where staff will help complete the digital form.

Hyderabad Airport ensures that all staff at passenger interaction points, including Information Desks, check-in counters, security, immigration, customs checkpoints, retail outlets, and boarding gates, are trained and aware of the Sunflower Program to provide appropriate support to those in need.

Launching the Sunflower Program, Mr. Pradeep Panicker, CEO-GMR Hyderabad International Airort Ltd said “The introduction of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative at Hyderabad Airport reflects our commitment to ensuring a seamless and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. We recognize the challenges faced by individuals with hidden disabilities during travel, and our aim is to foster an eco-system that is understanding, supportive, diverse, and inclusive. This will pave the way for enhanced communication between passengers, Airport staff and aid in overall improved travel experience.”

The Sunflower lanyard has become a globally recognized symbol for individuals with hidden disabilities, offering a discreet way to signal that they may require additional assistance. Originating in the UK in 2016, the initiative has expanded rapidly and is now utilized in over 200 airports and transport systems worldwide.

The lanyard enables wearers to communicate their need for extra help without the necessity of explaining their condition, ensuring a more comfortable and inclusive experience during travel.

Passengers who require special assistance, such as wheelchairs, should notify their respective airlines in advance of their journey to ensure that appropriate support is arranged.
