Antigua and Barbuda‘s tourism sector shows record growth in the first half of 2024, driven by strategic marketing and major events like the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority recently unveiled the mid-year tourism statistics for 2024.

It is showcasing remarkable growth and effective marketing strategies.

Record-Breaking Tourism Growth

Between January and June 2024, Antigua and Barbuda welcomed 176,665 stay-over visitors, marking a significant 15% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This also represents a 10% growth from 2019, the previous record year, which saw 161,434 visitors.

Data from the Antigua Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA) confirms a corresponding rise in hotel occupancy rates for the first half of the year, further underscoring the destination’s popularity.

Impact of T20 World Cricket Cup

June 2024 set a new record for month-over-month growth with a 42% increase in stay-over visitors.

This surge can be attributed to the ICC Cricket World Cup matches held in Antigua, attracting fans from participating countries such as India, Australia, and South Africa.

Cruise Tourism and Yachting Sector

Cruise tourism also saw a notable upswing, with a 30% increase in arrivals from January to June 2024 compared to the same timeframe in 2023.

The yachting sector similarly contributed positively to the economy, reflecting the diverse appeal of Antigua and Barbuda’s maritime offerings.

Strategic Marketing Initiatives

During the briefing, key marketing activities targeting major source markets, including the USA, UK/Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean were highlighted.

The introduction of new events to the destination’s calendar has also played a crucial role in attracting visitors.

These initiatives have been instrumental in maintaining and enhancing Antigua and Barbuda’s appeal as a premier travel destination.

Acknowledgment of Stakeholder Contributions

The Honorable Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Transportation, extended his gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions to the industry’s success.

The collaborative efforts have been pivotal in achieving the impressive growth witnessed in the first half of 2024.
