Avianca Cargo and AeroUnion celebrate a year of partnership with a new A330 P2F aircraft, boosting cargo capacity on the West Coast.

Avianca Cargo, the premier cargo airline in Colombia, together with its business ally AeroUnion, has revealed the acquisition of the new A330 P2F plane, a model converted from passenger use to freight. This addition is poised to boost AeroUnion’s capabilities and, by extension, the collaborative service the two companies offer to their clientele along the West Coast.

A year into their joint commercial venture, AeroUnion is poised to integrate its inaugural A330 P2F into its fleet. This move will augment its cargo handling capacity by 60% beyond what its existing fleet allows, reaffirming the duo’s commitment to their unified growth plan. This plan not only strengthens the cooperative network between Avianca Cargo and AeroUnion but also anticipates the inclusion of four more A330 aircraft over the 2024-2025 period.

“Freight transportation has shown significant improvement in recent years compared to pre-pandemic levels. Latin American exports have increased by approximately 16%, while imports have seen a 10% recovery. The A330 is an ideal aircraft due to its higher volumetric capacity and lower environmental impact, attributed to enhanced fuel efficiency per ton,” said Diogo Elias, Senior Vice President and Leader of Avianca Cargo.

Avianca Cargo manages a fleet of six A330 planes, while its partner, AeroUnion, possesses an additional five freighters. The latest A330 will focus on routes along the West Coast, significantly improving service to vital markets. This aircraft is specially equipped to carry perishables such as fruits and flowers, as well as bulky goods for industries like automotive, mining, and oil, plus e-commerce and package deliveries.

Avianca’s cargo network connects over 68 destinations, with 56 being direct routes. The airline runs 220 dedicated cargo flights and also leverages over 1,800 passenger flights each week to transport cargo, making it one of the largest and most eco-efficient networks in the region. Notably, Avianca Cargo is the first carrier in the Americas to achieve IATA CEIV certifications across four categories: Pharma, Fresh, Live, and Lithium Batteries, underscoring its commitment to safety and quality in cargo transport.

“We are happy to receive the new A330 P2F, an aircraft that comes to reinforce our service and reliability offer, increasing our volumetric capacity and improving our connectivity to the West Coast markets in our region,” said Danilo Correa, Aerounion’s CEO

“Avianca Cargo has a long history of initiating innovative air cargo solutions and the one-year anniversary of its commercial agreement with AeroUnion is a testament to this legacy, as well as its commitment to creating economic opportunities here in Los Angeles,” said Doug Webster, Interim Chief Operations & Maintenance Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. “LAWA is also pleased to welcome the new A330P2F aircraft to LAX. This addition will continue to enhance air freight services by meeting market demands and the evolving needs of the logistics community.”
