The renowned flagship property of Heritance Hotels and Resorts by Aitken Spence Hotels, Heritance Kandalama, on June 24th 2024, observed its 30th Anniversary. Located within the exotic tapestry of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, Heritance Kandalama stand tall as the well-known eco-retreat of the
province, amalgamating its natural surroundings flawlessly while contributing immersive experiences at the same time.
The resort has been designed by Deshamanya Geoffrey Bawa, holds the distinction of being Asia’s first LEED certified resort and the first Green Globe 21 certified resort. It’s a testament to its promise to stewardship of environment and the longest-certified ISO 14001 Environment Management System of Sri Lanka. Built in the middle of initial community resistance and misrepresentation in the early 1990s, in 1994, Heritance Kandalama opened its doors by incapacitating important concerns related to environment and culture.
Criticisms were mainly targeted on possible disturbances to the habitats of the wildlife and perceived effects on local community and culture. As a reply, in its architectural design, Heritance Kandalama executed robust measures. Raised on columns, the design was exactly made to simplify natural replacement of the lake by the water of rain and to allow the wildlife to flourish easily, thus minimalizing
disorders related to environment.
