MIA Leads the Way with Autonomous Wheelchairs Unveiled by Miami-Dade Officials and American Airlines

[[{“value”:”Reading Time: 2 minutes

On June 21, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, along with officials from American Airlines, Envoy Air, WHILL, Inc., and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, announced the introduction of ten new autonomous power chairs at Miami International Airport (MIA). These chairs, developed by WHILL, Inc., are now being used by Envoy Air to assist American Airlines passengers with limited mobility.

As part of our unprecedented efforts to modernize our airport and improve our customer experience, we ensure our county services are as accessible as possible for all our residents and visitors. Our hometown airport continues to be an award-winning industry leader in accessibility, so it brings me great joy to see MIA become the first airport in the country with these state-of-the-art self-driving wheelchairs. Thanks to Envoy Air and WHILL Mobility Services, travelers of all abilities have another way to access the wonder of air travel at MIA.

MIA became the first U.S. airport to receive these innovative self-driving mobility devices this spring. Passengers can select their destination on a touch screen, allowing the chairs to autonomously transport them to their desired gate, enhancing freedom, confidence, independence, and the overall customer experience. On average, 120 American Airlines passengers use these chairs daily in concourses D and E at MIA.

These autonomous wheelchairs are part of MIA’s extensive accessibility services, which include the MIAair tour program, offering practice travel experiences for passengers with disabilities; accessibility lanes in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) passport control areas; wheelchair charging stations at ten convenient locations; free sunflower lanyards for travelers with hidden disabilities; multi-sensory rooms in concourses D and J for young passengers with cognitive and developmental disabilities; the Aira Airport Network for navigation assistance for blind or low-vision travelers; and seven service animal relief areas.

MIA’s commitment to accessibility has earned it the distinction of being the first airport in Florida and the second in the United States to receive the Airports Council International (ACI) Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation, based on international best practices and recommendations.

Additionally, MIA is making an unprecedented investment of nearly $9 billion in future-ready maintenance upgrades and capital improvements to enhance the customer experience for generations to come.
