In the first half of 2024, Mongolia’s border crossings saw a total of 3,071,400 passengers (with each crossing counted twice). This marks an increase of 953,700 passengers, or 45.0%, compared to the same period last year.

In the first half of this year, Mongolia welcomed 1,547,300 passengers. Among them, 31.8% crossed the border through the Zamiin-Uud Border Port. Chinggis Khaan International Airport saw 25.8% of these entries, while 10.3% came through the Gashuunsukhait Border Port. Another 10.2% entered via the Altanbulag Border Port, and 5.5% through the Shiveekhuren Border Port. The remaining 16.4% utilized other ports of entry.

Tourism in Mongolia has shown a notable increase in the first half of the year. The country received 245,800 tourists, marking an increase of 18,900 visitors, or 8.3%, compared to the same period last year.

Chinese tourists significantly contributed to this growth, with an increase of 21,700 visitors, a substantial rise of 57.8%. This makes China a key source of tourism for Mongolia this year.

South Korea also saw a significant increase in tourists visiting Mongolia. There were 9,900 more South Korean tourists, reflecting a 27.5% rise. This underscores the growing popularity of Mongolia as a destination for South Koreans.

Kazakhstan followed, with 2,000 additional tourists, a 26.4% increase from the previous year. This growth suggests a strengthening of tourism ties between Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

Lastly, Japan saw a modest increase of 500 tourists, which represents a 7.7% rise. This indicates a steady interest from Japanese visitors in exploring Mongolia.

According to the ministry’s announcement, Mongolia welcomed 5,174 foreign tourists on Tuesday. This figure surpasses the previous record of 4,485 foreign tourists in a single day, which was set in mid-July last year during the peak tourism season.

In its efforts to diversify an economy that is predominantly reliant on export-oriented mining, Mongolia has been actively promoting tourism. The country has designated the years 2023-2025 as “Years to Visit Mongolia,” with the ambitious goal of attracting at least 1 million foreign tourists each year.

Since the start of this year, Mongolia has already hosted 314,148 foreign tourists. This builds on the momentum from last year, when over 650,000 foreign tourists visited the country.

The tourism sector’s success last year was remarkable, generating 1.2 billion U.S. dollars, which marked an all-time high for Mongolia. This achievement underscores the significant potential of tourism as a key driver of economic diversification.

With the ongoing initiatives and strategic focus on tourism, Mongolia is poised to continue setting new records and drawing more international visitors. The government remains committed to enhancing the tourism experience and infrastructure to support this growth.

By capitalizing on its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Mongolia aims to become a prominent destination on the global tourism map, contributing significantly to the national economy.
