US women’s fencing defeats Italy to win first-ever team gold medal in Olympics
The United States women’s foil team made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday by defeating the dominant Italian team to win gold for the very first time.
Italy had won four of the last six gold medals in this team event, but when Queens native Lauren Scruggs got the final touch on Arianna Errigo, she was in total shock that she and her teammates had just made history.
Scruggs, the silver medalist in the foil individual final, Lee Kiefer, who defeated her teammate to win individual gold, Maia Weintraub and Jacqueline Dubrovich were crying tears of joy as they embraced after the 45-39 victory.

The anchor leg of Scruggs and Errigo was a thrilling finish to this fantastic gold-medal duel.
AMERICAN LEE KIEFER TOPS TEAMMATE LAUREN SCRUGGS FOR GOLD IN INDIVIDUAL FOIL
Thanks to Weintraub building a gap against Francesca Palumbo to make it 35-26, then Kiefer sustaining it after making it 40-32 against Alice Volpi, Scruggs knew she had to score five more touches to win gold.
But the veteran Errigo would not make it easy on her. Errigo got the score back within three touches as Scruggs continued to talk to herself to find out how to get her foil on the Italian first.
A bold move came when Scruggs sprinted at Errigo while up 42-39, and her foil touched to finally get a point the United States’ way.
Errigo had some touches on Scruggs, but they were offline and the American took advantage by scoring the final four touches to capture gold.
It was an all-around team effort to get the job done against this Italian group, and their exceptional efforts will go down in the history books in Paris.

Katie Ledecky wins record-breaking 13th Olympic medal in women’s 4x200M freestyle relay
Katie Ledecky is now officially the GOAT of women’s swimming.
The 27-year-old won her 13th Olympic medal in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay, becoming the only woman to ever reach that mark.
Ledecky tied the record previously held jointly by Jenny Thompson, Emma McKeon, and Dara Torres with her gold medal in the 1500-meter on Wednesday.

The record came with a silver medal in the race, as Australia took home a gold, their swimming-leading fifth of the Games.
Ledecky and Michael Phelps are the only swimmers in Olympic history, male or female, to earn at least 13 Olympic medals (Phelps won 28).
Ledecky was the third American in the water, entering the pool with the United States trailing by 1.4 seconds, but she cut it by half-a-second midway through her leg. Ledecky touched the wall for the final time with the Americans trailing by just 0.33 seconds, so she made up plenty of ground.

Erin Gemmell was the anchor for the U.S. to try to pull out a massive comeback victory, but Australia’s Ariarne Titmus was too much to handle.
Ledecky still has one more shot to make even more history – she will compete in the women’s 800m freestyle, with the final taking place Saturday at 3:08 p.m. ET.
With a win, she will become the first woman to ever win nine Olympic golds in swimming (she shares the all-time record of eight with Thompson).
Phelps and Mark Spitz are the only swimmers to ever win nine golds.
This was Ledecky’s third medal in Paris, as she earned bronze in the 400-meter free (losing to Titmus and Australia).
It also was the 20th swimming medal for the Americans, but they now trail in golds, 5-4, to Australia.

Jake Paul calls out ‘sickening’ Olympics boxing controversy, offers fighter spot on undercard
Arguably the most prominent name in boxing has spoken out about the gender controversy in the Olympics.
After Angela Carini quit her fight against a boxer deemed to have XY chromosomes, Jake Paul called the ordeal “sickening” and “a travesty.”
“Doesn’t matter what you believe. This is wrong and dangerous,” Paul wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Imane Khelif of Algeria defeated Carini, who lasted all of 46 seconds before going to her corner to call off the fight.
Khelif celebrated the win while Carini was left in tears. After the fight, Carini, was heard yelling to her coaches in Italian, questioning the fairness of the bout.
“I got into the ring to fight,” she said, via Italy’s ANSA. “I didn’t give up, but one punch hurt too much, and so I said enough. I’m going out with my head held high.”
Consdering she opted not to continue fighting, Paul instead invited her to an undercard for his brand, Most Valuable Promotions (Paul’s fight against Mike Tyson in November will be an MVP card).
“To Angela Carini although your dreams couldn’t come true today because of the crazy agendas that are at play in our world at the moment, I would love to offer you to fight on an MVP undercard, to show the world your talents on a fair platform,” Paul wrote.
Khelif fought under a firestorm of controversy regarding a failed gender eligibility test in 2023.
Khelif was disqualified during the 2023 World Championships, sanctioned by the International Boxing Association. The organization said Khelif, and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting failed to meet gender eligibility standards.
IBA president Umar Kremlev explained the decision at the time, according to Russia’s Tass News Agency. Reuters reported at the time that Khelif tested positive for having high levels of testosterone.
“Based on DNA tests, we identified a number of athletes who tried to trick their colleagues into posing as women. According to the results of the tests, it was proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes were excluded from competition,” Kremlev said.
The IBA added on Wednesday that its test found Khelif had “competitive advantages over other female competitors.”
Khelif and the Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) both denied the claims that Khelif has XY chromosomes.
The International Olympic Committee also cleared Khelif to compete in the Games and defended Khelif in a statement on Thursday.

IOC defends Olympic boxers in gender eligibility controversy amid firestorm
The International Olympic Committee maintained Thursday that the boxers in its women’s competition “comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU).”
The IOC’s statement came as Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defeated Italy’s Angela Carini via abandonment. Khelif was able to compete despite the International Boxing Association (IBA) determined that Khelif had “XY chromosomes.”

The IBA said Wednesday that its test “conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.”
Khelif’s win sparked a firestorm across social media, with many saying the International Olympic Committee shouldn’t have allowed the fight to go on and that Khelif shouldn’t be competing in the matches.
The IOC defended allowing having Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting in the women’s competition and fired shots at the IBA. The organization added “with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport,” and their eligibility rules have been used in other IOC-sanctioned tournaments.
“We have seen in reports misleading information about two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two athletes have been competing in international boxing competitions for many years in the women’s category, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments,” the IOC said.
“These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.
“According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should ‘establish a clear procedure on gender testing”’
“The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years.”
The IOC added that it was “saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving.”
Lin is set to compete on Friday, and Khelif will go around on Saturday.
