ICCA: Athens among top 10 in-person MICE destinations in 2022

0

The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranked Greece 13th and Athens 8th as top performing in-person meetings destinations in its returning annual “Country – and City – Rankings for 2022” after a two-year absence.

The association released the results at the IMEX 2023 expo in Frankfurt, a time and place when the international meetings and events industry gather, in person.

Country, city rankings for 2022

Athens was ranked 8th globally hosting a total of 109 events last year. Leading the way in 2022 as the host of the most in-person events was Vienna with 162, followed by Lisbon 144, Paris 134, Barcelona 133, Prague 129, Madrid 128, Berlin 113, Athens 109, Brussels 108, London (106), Dublin, (105), Copenhagen (102), Singapore (101), Rome (79), and Amsterdam (73).

Greece was also among the 15 top countries hosting the largest number of in-person MICE events in 2022.

At the top of the list was the United States hosting 690 events last year, followed by Spain (528), Italy (522), Germany (484), France (472), United Kingdom (449), Portugal (294), Netherlands (253), Belgium (234), Canada (233), Austria (232), Japan (228), Greece (185), Sweden (179) and Switzerland (175).

The ICCA decided to revert to normal rankings after observing that approximately 85 percent of all meetings were held in-person.

According to data, 10,500 MICE events of which some 9,000 meetings were held in-person in 2022, remained unaffected by Covid-19 or were held in a hybrid format.

The ICCA notes however that the meetings industry is still catching up to the numbers of the last pre-pandemic year (13,254 meetings in 2019).

It’s heartening to see the drive towards in-person meetings is once more very strong and ICCA predicts this trend will grow throughout the coming year, said ICCA CEO Senthil Gopinath.

In 2021, the city of Athens ranked third among the top 50 performing meeting destinations in 2021.

In the same year, Greece ranked 17th, Athens 3rd and Thessaloniki 47th in the ICCA’s Destination Performance Index (DPI).

ICCA, today’s global meetings industry network, was founded in 1963 by a group of travel agents to exchange information on international congresses and conventions.

Over 60 years later ICCA’s membership network of over 1,000 suppliers to the international meetings industry spans the globe, with members in almost 100 countries.

Sabah’s annual Harvest Festival, which peaks on Tuesday (May 30) and Wednesday (May 31), started off with a moderate crowd comprising locals and foreign visitors due to the scorching weather.

This is a slightly smaller crowd compared with last year, which saw the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) grounds here fill up with throngs of people.

However, the hot weather did not stop visitors from visiting the stalls at the site.

Australians Perry and Harper together with their university friends, who have just arrived in the state for a study tour, said that they knew about the KDCA Kaamatan festival from their studies.

Harper said she is excited to watch the cultural performances in the traditional houses and hopes that she gets to dance to a tune or two later.

She said although the weather is super hot, she is intrigued by the food as well, the handicrafts and other unique cultural aspects displayed that bring the people of Sabah together in this Kaamatan celebration.

The first-timer to Sabah also feels that the “Land below the Wind” is a place worth visiting and hopes her fellow Frenchmen would consider coming to this state for their visits and travels in future.

The two-day event is the highlight of Sabah’s month-long harvest festival.

Guests can visit the KDCA in Penampang where they can buy and taste traditional beverages and local cuisines, visit the various traditional houses, and enjoy the cultural performances.

They can also watch the finale of the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant that culminates on May 31 when the fairest of them is crowned the state Unduk Ngadau.

Pavyllon London to Officially Open Its Doors at Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane on July 1, 2023

0

Yannick Alléno, one of the world’s most Michelin-starred chefs, is excited to announce that Pavyllon London, his debut London restaurant in Mayfair, will officially open its doors on July 1, 2023, with reservations now open for summer bookings. Set within Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane, the eagerly anticipated opening will offer Londoners and international visitors refined neighbourhood dining with highly crafted, innovative yet unpretentious plates, created from a live open kitchen.

Chef Yannick Alléno’s first venture in the city will feature a restaurant, bar, private dining room, and expansive al fresco terrace. It will be the epitome of Yannick Alléno’s commitment to blending knowledge and excellence with experimentation, thus modernising the foundations of French cuisine. The menu will draw inspiration from seasonal British produce while remaining deeply rooted in French techniques.

“Pavyllon London is an embodiment of my lifelong dream to redefine French dining,” says Chef Yannick Alléno. “It combines my family’s bistro-running legacy with my passion for culinary innovation. At Pavyllon London, we look forward to welcoming our guests into the heart of the action, creating interactive, less formal dining, centred around counter top seating and simply great food.”

Every plate at Pavyllon London will be a testament to Chef Yannick Alléno’s belief that chefs have a responsibility to care for the good health of their guests. The menu will feature dishes that are innovative, but unpretentious, reflecting the extraction method that Yannick Alléno has painstakingly developed over the past decade. The line-up on the London menu will include “Badaboum” organic egg with osciètre caviar and sorrel and Salish smoked salt; brioche-crusted sea bass quenelles with “Billy by” emulsion and mussels; and creamy pounded langoustine with potato and basil tuiles, and white onion emulsion.

Known for his revolutionary approach to sauce-making, Yannick Alleno’s innovative extraction method involves cooking in a vacuum to a highly specific time and temperature to harvest the purest flavour from each ingredient. These are then cryo-concentrated to capture their very essence, leading to dishes that are rich in flavour, yet mindful of guests’ well-being by reducing the amount of sugar, fat, and salt without compromising taste.

The Pavyllon London team is on the ground preparing to welcome guests, and comprises world-class culinary professionals, led by Executive Chef Andy Cook, Head Chef Benjamin Ferra Y Castell, Restaurant Manager Janice Wongso, Head Sommelier Baptiste Beaumard, Head Mixologist Michele Lombardi, and Head Bartender Ivan Arena. Each team member brings a wealth of expertise, innovative ideas, and a shared passion for their craft.

Renowned designer Chahan Minassian has masterfully created Pavyllon London’s interior, merging the chic conviviality of a Parisian residence with the familiarity of a British club. The space encapsulates the essence of Chef Yannick Alléno’s belief in the kitchen as a performance.

Pavyllon London has launched its reservation lines today, and extends a warm invitation to all those ready to reimagine what French dining can be.
