He said that Kupwara district has a vast untapped potential for adventure tourism which hat can help to sustain local economy and boost local employment by building an ecosystem of tourism-associated economic activities.
At the inaugural ceremony, the event saw a positive response from the local youth as around 30 youth including boys and girls participated in the event.
“This participation is expected to increase in coming days because the local youth are excited to participate in this first of its kind adventurous activity in the area,” the official said. “The Indian Army is committed to engage, encourage, educate and empower the youth of Kupwara by supporting their endeavours to provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talent and make a name for themselves, their community and state,” the Army official said.
As already reported by this newspaper, the Indian Army has taken several initiatives to promote border tourism as it has already opened Kaman Post, also known as the Bridge of Peace, situated along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla district, for tourists and common people, marking a significant moment of peace and tranquility in the region.

EU ambition for alternative fuels in rail is likely to be higher
The EU Regulation proposal for alternative fuels infrastructure now includes rail.
While rail was first not included in the scope of the European Commission’s proposal, it is now after negotiations and efforts of the European Parliament.
Sector organisations UNIFE and CER consider it a ‘step in the right direction’.
The new EU Regulation for the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure (AFIR) sets mandatory deployment targets for electric recharging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, at first mostly aimed at the road sector, maritime transport and airports.
However, in rail, alternative fuels are also part of efforts to further decarbonise.
Hydrogen and battery applications are already in use, with many rail stakeholders involved in projects with alternative fuels.
Therefore, UNIFE and CER applaud the conclusion and outcome of the negotiations of the AFIR which now includes rail under its scope.
In the AFIR proposal, it is now stated that EU Member States have to assess the development of alternative fuel technologies and propulsion systems, such as hydrogen or battery-electric train, for rail sections that cannot be fully electrified for technical or cost-efficiency reasons.
This also goes for any refuelling and recharging infrastructure needs to deploy these trains.
EU countries have to show their plans for unelectrified rail
In addition, Member States will have to provide an overview by 2025 of the state of play, perspectives, and planned initiatives for deployment of infrastructure including targets, key milestones and financing needed for hydrogen or battery electric trains on network segments that cannot be electrified and are not covered by the TEN-T regulation, within their National Policy Frameworks.
The proposal also states that the European Commission will be able to issue recommendations on the National Policy Frameworks regarding the level of ambition of targets and objectives and the policy measures related to them.
The draft national policy framework will need to be prepared by 1 January 2025 to allow the finalisation of the national policy frameworks by 1 January 2026.
However, next to the need for national governments to show plans for use of alternative fuels in rail, there are no clear targets set, like for fueling infrastructure for roads.
For example, recharging stations dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles need to be deployed every 60 kilometres along the unelectrified core network, and every 100 kilometres on the larger TEN-T comprehensive network from 2025 onwards, it is stated in the AFIR regulation.
‘Important incentive for the industry’
According to the rail sector organisations, AFIR sets an appropriate regulatory framework to sustain the investments made by railway suppliers, operators and infrastructure managers alike in innovative alternatives to diesel, facilitating European technology leadership in this domain.
UNIFE Director-General Philippe Citroën remarked that the European Rail Supply Industry is pleased to see that EU institutions, in particular thanks to the efforts of the European Parliament, have finally included rail in the scope of AFIR.
Even though the level of ambition could have been higher, the regulation will create an important incentive and visibility for the industry to continue its investments in developing competitive alternatives to diesel on lines that will not be electrified.
CER Executive Director Alberto Mazzola stresses that in the short-run, however, rail’s operating costs and in particular electricity costs need to be carefully assessed.
In today’s situation support measures are needed to make sure that rail’s intermodal competitiveness is not hampered and that a shift to diesel traction is avoided.

Happy first birthday to London’s Elizabeth Line
London is celebrating the first anniversary of public service on the Elizabeth Line, the highly anticipated addition to the capital’s transport network.
Since its launch, the Elizabeth Line has transformed the way people travel across the city, providing faster, more efficient connections between destinations like Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, and Reading and Heathrow in the west.
All via a brand new central London core, dug through a vast tunnel complex – at vast expense.
The Elizabeth Line, named for the late monarch and also known as Crossrail, represents one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe.
This monumental endeavour took over a decade to complete, involving the construction of 42 kilometres of new tunnels and the integration of several existing railway lines.
The result is a state-of-the-art railway system, easing congestion on much of the London network, and opening up new travel opportunities.
From its inaugural service on 24 May, 2022, the Elizabeth Line has enjoyed an overwhelming response, and now, according to some sources, accounts for an astonishing one in seven of all rail journeys in the UK.
The line serves several key London stations such as Paddington, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf, and is highly integrated into Underground and national rail services.
24 trains per hour
According to Transport for London, the body responsible for passenger operations in the capital, more than 150 million journeys have been taken across the Elizabeth Line in its first year.
Since opening, around 600,000 journeys are made on weekdays.
According to economic analysis conducted by TfL, the project has created more than 55,000 jobs across the UK and continues to support new housing, jobs and economic growth around London.
The Elizabeth line is the most significant addition to our transport network in decades, said Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London. It has proven to be much more than just a new railway – providing a crucial economic boost to the whole country and playing a vital role in drawing people back on to London’s public transport.
It has been a drawn out process, but the line is also now operating at its full planned capacity and connectivity.
Peak time frequencies are now running at an impressive 24 trains per hour on the core section, between Paddington and Whitechapel, with 16 trains per hour running off-peak.
That’s among the most frequent services anywhere on Earth. There are several other capacity enhancements, including the integration of some services previously handled by other operators.
The removal of any significant pauses for trains outside Paddington station has also brought reduced journey times for customers travelling from the west into central London – including international passengers from Heathrow.
Game changer
The Elizabeth Line has also played a pivotal role in easing congestion on London’s other transport routes. At a stroke the line added ten percent to the entire capacity of the city.
That though only tells part of the story.
By offering alternative routes and reducing pressure on existing lines, the Elizabeth Line has helped alleviate overcrowding during peak hours, enhancing the overall reliability of the city’s transport system.
It has also encouraged journeys which were not previously practical, and boosted economic development along its route.
With improved connectivity and accessibility, previously underdeveloped or overlooked neighbourhoods have experienced a surge in interest from businesses and investors.
To mark the first anniversary of public service on the Elizabeth Line, celebrations took place across the capital.
Transport for London organised special events at several stations along the line, including live music performances, art installations, and interactive exhibitions showcasing the engineering achievements and historical significance of the project.
The Elizabeth Line has cemented its place as an integral part of the transport network of London and the South East, said Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner .
It has given so many parts of London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex a real boost with new housing, workspaces, retail and economic growth. The line is a game changer.

A wildfire burning Southwest of Veneta, covering 300 acres approximately
Firefighters helps in containing the ‘7K Fire’ which is burning about ten miles southwest of Veneta, Oregon.
They seem to work overnight on Saturday.
The Oregon Department of Forestry reported that the fire is burning an estimated 300 acres and is considered 40% contained.
The officials declared that another nearby 20–acre spot fire is now completely lined.
The overnight progress made by the fire crews was possible by high relative humidity and overnight temperatures. Firefighters plan to hold the existing containment lines, stop them from growing, and keep flames away from homes and structures.
However, closely noted is the fact that Steep terrain is making it challenging for firefighters to put up fire lines around parts of the perimeter.
Natalie Weber, the Oregon Department of Forestry expresses that the safety of the fire personnel remains a top priority as firefighters work to suppress fire in an environment with steep terrain, narrow roads, brushy vegetation, and risks of falling trees and debris.
Crews are staging at Perkins Peninsula Country Park, which is currently closed to the public. People are asked to stay away from the area for safety reasons.
The cause of the fire, named for a landmark in the area, remains under investigation.
