Maldives Sees 15% Rise in Tourist Arrivals in July 2024

In July 2024, the Maldives experienced a significant 15.1% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year, welcoming 150,404 visitors. This growth stands out against the more modest gains seen earlier in the year. Year-to-date data reveals a 10% increase in tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2024, totaling 1,165,933 visitors. Despite global challenges, these numbers underscore the Maldives’ resilience and its enduring appeal as a premier travel destination.

Tourist numbers have shown consistent increases almost every month in 2024. January and March were particularly notable with rises of 11.5% and 11.9%, respectively, while February saw the highest growth rate at 22.2%. However, May 2024 did see a slight decline of 0.9% compared to May 2023, highlighting some fluctuations in the overall upward trend.

The primary sources of tourists in July 2024 were China, Russia, and the United Kingdom. China led the way with 154,665 arrivals, followed by Russia with 124,064 arrivals, and the UK with 103,559 arrivals.

As of July 2024, the Maldives boasted 1,215 operational tourist facilities, including 182 resorts, 14 hotels, 867 guesthouses, and 152 safari vessels, offering a total bed capacity of 62,481.

The Maldivian tourism sector continues to demonstrate growth and resilience. The consistent increase in tourist arrivals projects a positive outlook for the year, reaffirming the country’s status as a top travel destination. Maintaining this growth trajectory is crucial for the sustained recovery and expansion of the Maldivian tourism industry.
