As summer travel gains momentum, Vacasa partnered with Allison to explore Americans’ sunny season plans, motivations, and budgeting for their vacations. The recently released 2024 Summer Travel Trends report by Vacasa highlights key findings:

American travelers are gearing up for an active summer, averaging five trips each throughout the season. A significant 89% plan to explore destinations within the U.S., with lakes and beaches topping the list, constituting 63% of all summer travel.

With economic considerations in mind, 81% of summer travelers have adjusted their plans to be more budget-conscious. Vacasa’s analysis of search and booking data identifies Panama City Beach, FL, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Hilton Head, SC as budget-friendly spots, offering experiences under $250 per night.

Vacation rentals are increasingly popular, chosen for their value (66%), private amenities (57%), and better location options (43%) compared to other accommodations.

Key trends shaping this summer’s travel include:

Nearly half of Americans (49%) are taking a summer vacation, with 56% planning more frequent trips than last year.

Domestic travel remains predominant, appealing to 89% of travelers.

Trips vary from weekend getaways (90%) and weeklong stays (67%) to extended vacations, with 36% opting for multi-week breaks.

Vacation rentals are favored by 42% of travelers, marking a rising trend from previous years.

Holiday weekends, notably the Fourth of July (43%), are popular for travel this summer.

Beach destinations are the top choice, attracting 50% of travelers seeking sun and water.

Road trips are prevalent (77%), especially among Gen X and older travelers (82%), while 41% opt for flights.

Building on past memories, 34% revisit previous vacation spots, with parents of older children (40%) notably inclined.

Gen Z and Millennials contribute significantly to summer travel, with 58% traveling compared to 41% of Gen X and older demographics.
