In a landmark event, Zimbabwe recently hosted the first-ever Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa, under the auspices of the First Lady of Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Dr. Auxillia C. Mnangagwa. The forum, a collaborative effort with the Basque Culinary Center, marked a significant stride in positioning Africa on the global tourism map, particularly through the lens of gastronomy.

Harnessing Gastronomy for Economic and Cultural Growth

With over 200 participants from 33 countries, including high-level delegates such as 11 Ministers and representatives from the African Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the forum focused on the potential of gastronomy tourism as a sustainable development driver. Discussions centered on incorporating gastronomy into national tourism agendas and enhancing Africa’s gastronomic visibility worldwide.

Key Outcomes and Initiatives

The forum was a hub of vibrant discussions about integrating traditional culinary practices with modern innovation to craft unique food tourism experiences. Key topics included the necessity of adequate funding and the importance of valuing and promoting local gastronomy to instill a sense of pride in African culinary heritage. The dialogue also extended to how the African diaspora could play a crucial role in promoting African cuisine on a global scale.

In a notable highlight, the UN Tourism Regional Gastronomy Pitch Challenge unveiled groundbreaking projects aimed at enriching the gastronomy and tourism sectors. Zimbabwe’s own Gracia Bvute won the challenge with her innovative project, Pabvute Gourmet. The forum also celebrated the achievements of young talents through the Youth Photo Contest “A Journey through Zimbabwe’s Gastronomy,” with Nokutenda Tombindo and David Sadindi securing the top spots.

Future Prospects and Sustainable Practices

The establishment of the Zimbabwe International Tourism Academy for the Culinary Arts, in partnership with UN Tourism, was another significant achievement, demonstrating Zimbabwe’s commitment to culinary education and skill development. This initiative is set to foster culinary talent across Africa, supported by 100 scholarships from the UN Tourism Academy.

Moreover, the forum saw the appointment of four UN Tourism Ambassadors for Responsible Tourism, who are set to champion sustainable culinary practices and promote national cuisines. These ambassadors include notable chefs from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.

Looking Ahead

With the successful conclusion of this inaugural forum, the stage is set for the next edition, which will be hosted by Tanzania. This ongoing series of forums underscores a robust commitment to leveraging gastronomy tourism as a catalyst for socio-economic development across Africa.

Zimbabwe’s role as a leader in this initiative not only highlights its dedication to sustainable tourism but also sets a precedent for other nations on the continent to follow, promising a future where African culinary heritage is celebrated and cherished on a global scale.
